High alert issued over myGov scam
The Commonwealth Government’s Cyber Security website has issued two high alerts relating to scams for the Government’s myGov website. The scams relate to fake myGov tax refund emails and fake Medicare emails.
Scammers have long used the promise of a tax refund to trick people into sharing their personal information or to download malware.
The current scam has the email subject line of ‘Important information regarding your account’, it includes the myGov logo and claims to be from myGov. Instead, the email is a phishing scam designed to steal both your personal and financial information.
The body of the email asks you to click on a link to claim your refund. Anyone clicking on the link is then taken to a fake tax refund claim. The scammers then use this information to commit credit card fraud and identity theft. Further information about fake myGov tax refund emails can be read on the Cyber Security website.
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has responded by reminding everyone of the need to be vigilant as the regulators usually see a spike in scam activity at tax time of the year. Please remember, the ATO and myGov will NEVER send an email or SMS asking you to click on a link and provide login, personal or financial information, download a file or open an attachment.
With regards to the Medicare scam, scammers have set up a clone of the myGov website to trick people into sharing their login and bank account details. To find out more about the Medicare scam, please visit the The Australian Cyber Security Centre website.
